Waikiki Beach Oahu
Island of Oʻahu

Waikīkī & Honolulu

Oʻahu • Waikīkī

Oʻahu combines the easiest major gateway to Hawaiʻi with beaches, city life, historic places and island scenery. Waikīkī makes a convenient base while still allowing time to explore beyond Honolulu.

Leahi Diamond Head Oahu aerial
Oʻahu

Diamond Head

Lēʻahi

Known in Hawaiian as Lēʻahi, the crater forms one of the most recognizable features of Oʻahu’s south shore and pairs naturally with time in nearby Waikīkī.

Pearl Harbor Oahu
Oʻahu History

Pearl Harbor

Wai Momi • Oʻahu

Pearl Harbor adds an important historical dimension to an Oʻahu itinerary. Allow dedicated time for the area rather than trying to combine it with every Honolulu attraction in the same few hours.

Maui coastline Hawaii
Island of Maui

Maui

Maui

Maui works especially well for travelers who want to slow down after Oʻahu. Beaches, coastal scenery, upland landscapes and East Maui create enough variety for several nights without needing to change islands again.

Hana Maui waterfall and rainforest
East Maui

Road to Hāna

Hāna

The journey toward Hāna is about the landscape as much as the destination: rainforest, waterfalls and coastal scenery create one of Maui’s defining road experiences. Plan it at a respectful pace rather than treating every roadside location as an automatic stop.

Island of Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi is a strong choice when dramatic natural scenery matters more than city sightseeing. Lush valleys, rain, waterfalls and rugged coastline give the island its own character.

Na Pali Coast Kauai
Kauaʻi

Na Pali Coast

Nā Pali

The Nā Pali coastline is one of Kauaʻi’s defining landscapes, where steep green cliffs meet the Pacific. How you experience it should depend on conditions, season and the type of trip you want to build.

Maunakea summit Hawaii Island
Island of Hawaiʻi

Hawaiʻi Island

Hawaiʻi • Maunakea

Hawaiʻi Island offers a wider range of elevation and landscapes than many first-time visitors expect. High mountain environments, volcanic terrain and green valleys make it particularly rewarding for travelers focused on nature.

Waipio Valley waterfall Hawaii
Hawaiʻi Island

Waipio Valley

Waipiʻo

Waipiʻo is both culturally significant and visually dramatic. For visitors, the experience should be planned around current access rules and appropriate viewpoints rather than assuming every part of the valley is open for casual exploration.

Travel with Respect

Experience Hawaiʻi with Care

Hawaiʻi is more than a beach destination. Its place names, landscapes and cultural sites carry meaning, so our itineraries should use Hawaiian names accurately and avoid treating culturally sensitive places as simple photo stops.

Stay on designated routes, follow local access guidance, respect the ʻāina and give each island enough time to be experienced thoughtfully.

Plan Your Hawaiʻi Journey

Useful Before You Choose the Islands

Do Not Island-Hop Too Fast

Every island change takes time. For a one-week holiday, one or two islands usually creates a better experience than trying to visit four.

Use Local Place Names

Names such as Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Waikīkī, Lēʻahi, Hāna, Maunakea and Waipiʻo are used throughout this page as part of the destination’s local identity.

Weather Varies by Island

Conditions can differ substantially between coasts, elevations and islands, so daily plans should remain flexible where nature is the main attraction.

Respect Access Rules

Some valleys, trails, cultural places and high-elevation areas have special access requirements. Your final itinerary should follow current local guidance.

Hawaiʻi Travel FAQs

Common Questions Before Booking

How many Hawaiian islands should I visit on one trip?

For about one week, one or two islands usually works best. With ten to fourteen days, a three- or four-island journey becomes more comfortable.

Which island is best for a first visit?

Oʻahu is a practical starting point when you want Waikīkī, Honolulu, historical sites and easy access to a variety of experiences. Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island can then be added according to your interests.

Should I write Hawaii or Hawaiʻi?

For this website, the main English navigation name remains “Hawaii,” while “Hawaiʻi” is used as the Hawaiian local identity and throughout culturally specific place naming.

What is Diamond Head called in Hawaiian?

The Hawaiian name is Lēʻahi. We use “Diamond Head” where it helps visitors recognize the attraction, with Lēʻahi shown prominently as the local place name.

Is Mauna Kea the same as Maunakea?

On this page we use “Maunakea,” following contemporary Hawaiʻi visitor guidance for the mountain’s Hawaiian name.

Are these Hawaiʻi itineraries fixed?

No. Island combinations, hotel choices, number of nights, sightseeing and transportation can all be customized before booking.
